More Than 700 Arrested In New York ‘Wall Street’ Protest

By

(RFE/RL) — Over 700 protesters have been arrested in New York City.

Police say they were arrested for blocking traffic and attempting to hold an unauthorized march across the Brooklyn Bridge, which had to be temporarily shut down, as part of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The demonstration, now in its second week, is protesting corporate greed, home foreclosures, high unemployment, the federal bailout of U.S. banks, among other issues.

Activists pitched camp near the site of the former World Trade Center two weeks ago.

Similar rallies are now sprouting up in other cities, including Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco.

Police on October 2 say the bridge was reopened to traffic late on October 1.
