Armenian Genocide Vote Prompts Turkey To Recall Ambassador To Germany

By

Turkey has recalled its ambassador to Germany for consultations following the German parliament’s decision Thursday to recognize the Armenian genocide, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said while on a trip to Nairobi.

“This is a decision that will affect the relations seriously,” Erdogan said about the ties with Germany, but adds that he will handle the matter more in depth when he returns to Turkey.

German lawmakers on Thursday almost unanimously approved a symbolic resolution that declares the Ottoman killings of Armenians during World War I genocide.

Successive Turkish governments have vehemently rejected the use of the term genocide to describe the mass expulsion and killings of as many as 1.5 million Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire, of which Turkey is the successor state.
