The United Nations ranked Russia 76th in its first ever World Happiness Report, New York-based Earth Institute said.

The report, commissioned by the United Nations Conference on Happiness, “reviews the state of happiness in the world today and shows how the new science of happiness explains personal and national variations in happiness,” the Earth Institute said on its website.

According to the survey, the top ten happiest countries include Northern European countries, Denmark, Norway, Finland and the Netherlands. Their average life evaluation score is 7.6 on a 0-to-10 scale. The least happy countries are all sub-Saharan African states – Togo, Benin, Central African Republic and Sierra Leone – with an average life evaluation of 3.4.

Russia was ranked 76th, tied with Moldova and Peru.

The report that analyzed over 150 countries, assesses factors that affect happiness, including financial well-being, political freedom, strong social bonds and a lack of corruption.
