US Drone Strike Said To Target Al-Qaeda Leader In Pakistan

By

(RFE/RL) — Reports say a U.S. drone strike has targeted a senior Al-Qaeda leader, but it was unclear whether he was among those hit in the northwestern Pakistan incident.

U.S. and Pakistani government sources said Abu Yahya al Libi was the target of a drone strike early on June 4 in Pakistan’s North Waziristan region.

Libi, a Libyan citizen, is regarded as a senior aide to Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri. He has survived previous attacks and once escaped from a U.S.-run prison in Afghanistan.

Libi has a $1 million U.S. bounty on his head.

Reports suggest U.S.-operated drones have launched three attacks along Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan between June 2 and June 4, killing nearly 30 people.
