Egypt: Sit-In After Destruction Of Orthodox Church

By

Around a thousand Christians, Catholics and Orthodox have been staging a sit-in over the past days outside the governorate of Aswan in protest against the torching of the Edfu Church last Friday. The fire also damaged various nearby homes, without however, causing any casualties.

MISNA sources in Aswan say that the governor of the region pledged to rebuild the church.

“The demonstrators are peacefully expressing a desire of peaceful coexistence, but also demanding justice and that the culprits be individuated”, said Father Giuseppe Cruciani, a Comboni missionary.

Edfu is situated around 100km north of Aswan, South Egypt’s main city.
