Syria To Grant Citizenship To Kurds

Informed sources expected Wednesday that Syria will grant nationality for tens of thousands of Kurds during the upcoming days. President Bashar al-Assad met on Tuesday, “a number of social leaders in the province of Hasaka,” according to news agency SANA.

During the meeting “the situation in the province (which Kurds constitute the majority of its population), was discussed.

President al-Assad heard about the living conditions of the people of the province of Hasaka, their requirements and problems”.

It was stressed during the meeting “the importance of concerted efforts by local authorities of the province and their people to solve these problems.”

Meanwhile, the editor of the state mouthpiece Tishrin newspaper has contacted some intellectuals and dissidents in order to initiate a dialogue with the opposition.

Samira al-Masalma, told AFP she was in touch with a number of well-known dissidents who have been jailed for their opinions in the past to try to start a dialogue.

“I have contacted certain intellectuals who are in disagreement with the regime, to organise a dialogue in which each of them can express their opinions on political reforms and civil liberties for the authorities to take into account,” Masalma said.
