Israel Wants Total Iranian Halt Of Uranium Enrichment

By

(RFE/RL) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Iran “playing for time” in international negotiations over its nuclear program.

Netanyahu also says Israel wants a total Iranian halt of uranium enrichment — a process that can be directed toward development of a nuclear weapon — to be on the agenda of the upcoming talks between the Islamic republic and world powers.

Netanyahu presented his position in Jerusalem on May 9 to visiting European Union envoy Catherine Ashton.

An Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Israel also wants the removal from Iran of all material that has already been enriched and for the Iranian nuclear facility near Qom to be dismantled.

The next round of talks between Iran and six world powers — the United States, China, Britain, France, Russia, and Germany — is expected May 23.
