Burundi: Army Chief Of Staff Escapes Attack Unharmed

By

Burundi’s Army Chief of Staff, General Prime Nyiongabo, escaped an assassination attempt on a busy road in the capital, Bujumbura.

According to official sources, gunmen attacked his motorcade at a busy intersection, sparking a gunbattle that left 4 bodyguards and a police officer dead, as well as three of the assailants. The General was unharmed.

Former Intelligence Chief General Adolphe Nshimirimana was killed last month in similar circumstances. Nshimirimana was considered the ‘second in command’ after President Pierre Nkurunziza, just re-elected for a controversial third term.
