Clinton Demands Iran Reply To Nuke Report

By

(RFE/RL) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is calling on Iran to respond within days to new allegations by the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog agency that Iran has done work toward making nuclear weapons.

Clinton, speaking at an Asia-Pacific summit in Honolulu, Hawaii, on November 11, said the Obama administration is consulting with its allies on further possible measures to pressure Tehran on the nuclear issue.

“Regarding Iran, we discussed the recent report raising serious concerns about the weapons-related work the Iranian government has undertaken,” Clinton said.

“Iran has a long history of deception and denial regarding its nuclear program. In the coming days, we expect Iran to answer the serious questions raised by this report. The United States will continue to consult closely with partners and allies on the next steps we can take to increase pressure on Iran.”

Earlier this week, the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released a report saying that Iran had worked on developing an atomic bomb design, and may still be conducting such research.

Iran, which denies it seeks to develop nuclear weapons, has condemned and rejected the IAEA findings, but has not yet offered detailed answers to the agency’s allegations.
