German PM Angela Merkel made an unannounced trip to Afghanistan with Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere. Merkel arrived at Mazar-i Sharif in Northern Afghanistan on May 10, Friday to boost the motivation of German troops after the death of the first German soldier in an insurgent attack last Saturday.
A military spokesman said “She is here to support the troops, to attend briefings, and to address the concerns after our recent loss.” According to The Washington Post, “We will be an eye on the political process moving forward here” Merkel told the troops.
After the United States and Britain, Germany has the third biggest international troop deployment in Afghanistan with about 4.800 troops in NATO International Security Assistance Force.
