Forces Kill Insurgents, Capture Terrorists In Afghanistan

Afghan and coalition forces killed eight enemy fighters and detained several others yesterday in operations throughout Afghanistan, military officials reported.

A coalition air weapons team in Helmand province’s Sangin district killed five insurgents after spotting the men with a bomb detonator and an automatic machine gun mounted on their truck.

Security forces killed two insurgents linked to a senior Taliban weapons smuggler during a shootout in Zabul province’s Shamulazai district. Troops opened fire on the insurgents after one brandished a weapon and the other appeared to attempt to detonate a suicide vest.

Forces killed an armed insurgent and detained several others, including a Taliban leader responsible for distributing materials used for building car bombs, in Kandahar province’s Kandahar City.

Afghan and coalition forces detained several suspected insurgents, including a Haqqani network weapons trafficker, in Khost province’s Sabari district. The Haqqani terrorist also reportedly is responsible for finance, media and logistical support for the Sabari district Haqqani network.

Forces detained several suspected insurgents, while searching for a Taliban leader linked to several attacks on security forces, in Logar province’s Charkh district.

In March 8 operations:

Afghan and coalition forces killed two enemy fighters after insurgents ambushed the combined patrol in Kandahar province’s Shah Wali district.

Security forces killed one insurgent and detained two others in an operation geared toward disrupting an insurgent leader’s ability to plan and execute attacks in Nimroz province’s Khash Rod district.

Security forces found two weapon stockpiles in southern Afghanistan. Operations resulted in seizure of more than 200 assault rifle rounds, six mortars, five rocket-propelled grenade boosters, four assault rifles, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and assorted bomb-making materials.
