Spain Welcomes Mongolia Abolishing Death Penalty

By

The Government of Spain said it welcomes and congratulates Mongolia on abolishing the death penalty following the approval of a new Criminal Code by the country’s Parliament, which will come into force next September.

In a statement, the Spanish government noted that each year the international community continues to make progress towards abolishing this form of punishment, with countries joining up to this irreversible global trend.

The Spanish government said that it, “takes this opportunity to reiterate Spain’s firm opposition to the death penalty in all cases and under all circumstances, regardless of the severity of the crime committed, as it considers it to be a cruel, inhumane and degrading punishment, which implies violations of human rights, lacks any proven dissuasive effects in criminal conduct and leads to irreparable effects in the case of judicial error.”
