Libya: 120 Escape From Prison In Tripoli
Some 120 criminal prisoners escaped from Libya’s Jedaida prison today in Tripoli, said the chief of the National Guard, noting that security services were placed on alert.
“About 120 criminals escaped from Jedaida prison today. Security services are on high alert and try to arrest them,” said Khaled al-Sharif. “We are trying to track them down and some of them have already been arrested,” he added. Reserved for criminals, Jedaida prison is under the control of the Ministry of Justice. In August, a mutiny broke out in the prison, injuring two inmates.
The Libyan authorities have taken control on several prisons in Libya, including that of Jedaida, previously held by former rebels who fought the regime of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi.
NGOs have denounced violations of human rights against officials and supporters of the old regime held by former rebels in prisons, who are not controlled by the authorities.
