Egypt: Mubarak Returns To Prison

By

Hosni Mubarak, 84, was on Monday returned to his prison. The Egyptian prosecutor Abdel Meguid Mahmoud ordered the transfer of the former president to Tora prison in southern Cairo. The ousted leader was admitted on June 19 to a military hospital on the outskirts of Cairo after suffering a heart attack and stroke. The health of the former president is “stable and considered good given his age,” said Assistant Attorney General, Adel el Said.

However, it seems the truth about his actual health status is difficult to establish. The official MENA news agency announced last month his “clinical death” while medical sources acknowledged he was in a coma and on life support.

Some Egyptians suspect the military tries to hide his real condition in order to offer a more comfortable end to Hosni Mubarak’s life. No independent medical examination has so far helped to pinpoint the diseases suffered by the former head of state. Mubarak’s lawyers believe that the deterioration of his condition was related to the detention conditions imposed upon him.

Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the deaths of 800 protesters during the uprising that ended his 30-year rule over Egypt.
