Egypt: Investigation Looking At Mubarak Responsible For Civilian Deaths
An official Egyptian probe into the uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak holds the former leader responsible for hundreds of civilian deaths and concludes that policemen used excessive force against protesters.
The report, published by Egypt’s state news agency MENA, conveyed the number of deaths in the events leading to the revolution amounted to 864 people. Number of injuries reached 6,467 until 16 February. 26 officers and policemen killed during the period from 25 January until 9 February.
The Secretary General of the Commission, Counsel Omar Marwan said Tuesday at a news conference stressed that the former interior minister Habib Al-Adli should obtain the approval of Mubarak’s for shooting at the demonstrators.
Marwan said that the shooting lasted for several days. However, the former president didn’t hold the shooters accountable for firing and this confirms his involvement and responsibility, Marwan said.
The report of the Fact-Finding Committee headed by Judge Adel Koura found that bullets fired by police hit people who were watching the events from the balconies and windows of their homes.
The report said it had confirmed eyewitnesses’ statements and video clips, that some of the senior members of ruling party and some policemen, especially from the Criminal Investigation Department had orchestrated rallies in support of Mubarak. These rallies ended with attacks on peaceful demonstrators in Tahrir Square.
