Ayad al-Shabwani, a senior leader of Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), has been killed in fighting with the army, a Yemeni military source said on Thursday.

According to AFP, Shabwani died on Tuesday in heavy fighting that continued into Wednesday between the army and suspected Al-Qaeda fighters near Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province, east of the main southern city Aden.

The official Saba news agency had said earlier that “two prominent members of the Al-Qaeda leadership were killed … in Abyan province,” naming them as Ayad al-Shabwani and Awad Mohammed Saleh al-Shabwani.

Meanwhile, a British businessman was killed when his booby-trapped car went off in Yemen’s main southern city of Aden on Wednesday, security officials said.

The man, who was the head of a shipping company, was killed in the Moalla area of Aden near a hotel where his company has an office, a police official said.

An intelligence officer told AFP, however, that the attack “carries the fingerprints of Al-Qaeda.”
