Syria: Activists Say Security Forces Kill Six In Mosque Attack

By

(RFE/RL) — Human rights activists say that at least six people have died after security forces fired on protesters outside a mosque in the Syrian city of Deraa.

Hundreds of people had earlier gathered in the streets outside the Omari mosque to prevent troops from storming it.

Before the attack, electricity was cut off in the area and telephone services were severed.

Cries of “God is great” erupted across neighborhoods in Deraa when the shooting began.

It was not immediately clear whether the protesters had any weapons.

No comment was immediately available from President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
