Iran: Anti-Government Protest During Funeral Of Famous Footballer

An Iranian opposition website reported on Wednesday that demonstrations against the Iranian Government and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei erupted during the funeral of a football player, Nasser Hejazi.

The website said participants in the funeral of Hejazi in the Azadi Stadium in Tehran called for the release of opposition leaders Mir-Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karroubi.

They also chanted slogans saying that the fate of Khamenei will be the same as Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Zine El Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia.

It is noteworthy that Hejazi had strongly criticized the policies of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after the introduction of food and fuel rations.

Hejazi was one of the most famous footballers in Iran. He died last Monday after a battle with lung cancer.
