South Korea To Use Robot Guards To Patrol Prisons

By

(RFE/RL) — Robot guards are expected to be patrolling South Korean prisons next year.

Researchers say a jail in the eastern city of Pohang plans to run a month-long trial with three of the robots in March.

According to a statement from the Asian Forum for Corrections, a South Korea-based group of researchers in criminality and prison policies, the robot wardens are equipped with sensors enabling them to detect abnormalities such as suicidal behaviour and violence and report it to prison officers.

The robotic guards move on four wheels.

A group of scientists developed them under a project organised by the South Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
