On Thursday morning at 0600 GMT, NATO took sole command of international air operations over Libya.

“The Alliance has the assets in place to conduct its tasks under Operation Unified Protector – the arms embargo, no-fly zone and actions to protect civilians and civilian centres,” NATO said in a statement.

The statement contined, “In line with the mandate of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973, NATO’s focus is on protecting civilians and civilian-populated areas against the threat of attack.”

At Monday’s meeting in London held by various world leaders the decision was made that Colonel Muammar Qadhafi must leave power and the coalition military operations will continue until “attacks against civilians cease”.

Delegates of the National Transition Council (CNT), the political body formed by Qadhafi’s opposers based in Bengasi, did not attend because they were not invited.
