Afghanistan: Suicide Bomb Attack On NATO Base Kills 7, Injures 13

By

A suicide attacker rammed a truck packed with explosives into a checkpoint at a NATO base outside Khost in eastern Afghanistan, killing up to seven Afghans in the east of the country, a security official said.

“The attacker drove his truck full of explosives into the first security check post of the NATO base. Initial information shows that seven Afghans have been killed and 13 others injured,” AFP quotes the anonymous official as saying.

It is reported the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Just a month ago the Afghan capital Kabul was hit by at least five explosions, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people. The attacks, claimed by the Taliban, took place following surprise visit by the US president just hours after his plane took off. The Taliban later confirmed that the bombing attacks were their response to Obama’s visit.

In mid-April insurgents launched coordinated attacks on the diplomatic area and NATO headquarters in the capital Kabul, also targeting adjoining provinces. A total of 36 insurgents were killed before the assault was overcome by heavy gunfire by forces supported by US-led coalition helicopters after an 18-hours-long battle. The attacks also claimed the lives of eight policemen and three civilians. Some 74 were wounded.

On March 29, an attack on NATO forces in Afghanistan left more than 30 people dead, including 14 militants, five Afghan security guards and a soldier. They ambushed a supply convoy of the NATO-led coalition in a mountainous area in the west of the country. The ensuing firefight lasted for three hours, according to local officials.
