By

Spain’s Acting Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, received the parents and the sister of the Venezuelan political prisoner Leopoldo López, who has just served out two years deprived of his liberty in a military prison.

Leopoldo López Gil, Antonieta Mendoza de López and Diana López Mendoza handed over a copy of the book “Preso, pero libre” [Imprisoned, yet free], which the Venezuelan prisoner of conscience wrote while in prison, and which will shortly be published in Spain.

The parents of Leopoldo López thanked the Rajoy for granting them the Spanish nationality by means of a certificate of naturalisation, which reinforces their democratic guarantees and the international protection of human rights.

Rajoy reiterated his concern over the situation in Venezuela and conveyed a message of encouragement and solidarity to the more than 70 political prisoners and to all the people of Venezuela due to the delicate situation in the country, a generous land of welcome which is home to almost 200,000 Spaniards.
