Oman: More Demonstrations After Protester Dies
Pro-democracy leaders in Oman called Saturday for more protests after clashes with security forces left at least one person.
The unrest Friday took place in the northern industrial city of Sohar.
According to the AP, the Omani military imposed a nighttime curfew in Sohar and deployed units around government offices and other key buildings.
Medical officials said a 22-year-old man died early Saturday from wounds in the clashes and at least four other protesters were heart.
Authorities say they used tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets in “self defense” after the crowds started pelting riot police with stones and brandishing knives, according to a statement by Oman’s prosecutor’s office.
Protesters, however, claim that police opened fire with live ammunition.
