Obama Allows CIA To Help Syria Rebels

U.S. President Barack Obama has signed a secret document authorizing U.S. aid to the Syrian rebels, who are trying to overthrow the regime of Bashar al-Assad, U.S. television networks reported Wednesday. Representatives from the White House declined to comment on this reports but have not explicitly ruled out the idea that Washington allowed more support in terms of intelligence forces for the anti-Assad fighters.

Washington had earlier said that the U.S. offered medical assistance and logistical support to Syrian rebels but refused to provide arms, warning that it would be counter-productive to further “arm” the conflict.

This information on a tighter relationship between the U.S. and Syrian rebels appears when the violent confrontations in Syria intensify as fighting rages between government and opposition forces in Damascus and Aleppo.

Meanwhile, a raid by Syrian security forces carried out Wednesday against a town near Damascus killed 43 people. Some were executed, said Thursday the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR).

“The regime’s forces entered Wednesday into the town of Jdeidet Artouz (southwest of Damascus), arrested hundreds of young people and locked them in a school where they were tortured,” said the NGO.

“On Thursday morning after the operation, the bodies of 43 people were found. Some were victims of summary executions,” said the SOHR. Moreover, according to it, 163 people died Wednesday in violence in Syria, including 98 civilians, 20 rebels and 45 soldiers.
