Robert Reich: Bernie Or Biden? – OpEd

By

As the Democratic Party’s “moderate” (or shall we say “establishment”) wing coalesces around Joe Biden to stop Bernie, the primary contest is starting to look a lot like 2016, when the same wing rallied around Hillary Clinton.

Today Amy Klobuchar quit the race to endorse Biden. Pete Buttigieg is endorsing Biden, too. As the New York Times’s David Leonhardt puts it in his column today, “if you’re a Democrat who doesn’t want Bernie Sanders to be the party’s nominee, your choice is now clear: you should vote for Joe Biden.”

But suppose you’re a Democrat who doesn’t want Donald Trump to have a second term? Suppose you’re a Democrat who suspects that Trump got elected in the first place because he exploited a deep sense of betrayal felt by tens of millions of Americans whose wages haven’t budged in 40 years and who know the system is rigged for the benefit of those at the top? Do you really vote for Joe Biden?

I don’t think so.

What do you think?

Robert Reich

Robert B. Reich is Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley and Senior Fellow at the Blum Center for Developing Economies, and writes at robertreich.substack.com. Reich served as Secretary of Labor in the Clinton administration, for which Time Magazine named him one of the ten most effective cabinet secretaries of the twentieth century. He has written fifteen books, including the best sellers "Aftershock", "The Work of Nations," and"Beyond Outrage," and, his most recent, "The Common Good," which is available in bookstores now. He is also a founding editor of the American Prospect magazine, chairman of Common Cause, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and co-creator of the award-winning documentary, "Inequality For All." He's co-creator of the Netflix original documentary "Saving Capitalism," which is streaming now.

For Voters who don’t want Trump, the Choice is clear: Bernie, Or 3rd Party!
In 2016 the Democrats demonstrated they cannot organize Kittens around a bowl of milk. Now they want a replay of that disaster.
In 1992, when Clinton was wanting the Nomination, the Chair of the Washington State Central Committee, told a Group of King County Democrats that “If we can Win, we don’t care about anything else!”
Apparently winning the White House with the Corrupt Clinton has morphed into “Anyone but Bernie! If it’s and Orange Turnip in a different Party, that is OK too!”
The only thing that stays the same is that the Dems don’t care about The Party. Blocking the Progressive Left of their own Party would cripple the schemes and scams they are brokering. Obviously, it’s whoever pays the best when you play in the Big Leagues.

I think it’s self-defeating to say “Bernie or Bust!” when the other option is Trump.
