By

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit southern Indonesia off the island of Java early on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

Thousands fled their homes but there have so far been no reports of injuries or damage inflicted.

According to seismologists, the epicenter of the quake was located 412 km (256 miles) from the country’s capital Jakarta. The quake was centered 15 miles underwater.

Indonesian seismologists said the magnitude was 7.1 and issued a tsunami warning.

Indonesia is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where continental plates meet and cause high volcanic and seismic activity. It has more active volcanoes than any other country in the world.
