By

The Iranian government has announced that it will launch the first phase of its National Internet in June.

The Fars News Agency reports that Reza Taghipour, Iranian Minister of Communications and Technology, announced on Tuesday: “Our foremost priority in the New Year is the launch of the national information network, and the first phase of this will be launched in June.”

He added that the whole project will be completed by the end of the Iranian year.

Iranian authorities are highly critical of the content of the World Wide Web, saying it contains both “immoral” and “seditious” material. Therefore, they have announced plans for launching their own national internet, also referred to as “clean Internet.”

The Minister of Communications has indicated that the internet can be “culturally, socially and morally harmful”, which has led many countries to launch their own internet.
