South Africa: Home Affairs Welcomes High Court Ruling On Dalai Lama

By

The Department of Home Affairs has welcomed the judgment in the Western Cape High Court dismissing the IFP and Cope application against government regarding the visa application for the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama.

“The department is currently studying the full text of the judgment with a view to making a full statement on the matter,” Home Affairs said on Friday.

The Western Cape High Court dismissed the application against the Departments of Home Affairs and International Relations and Co-operation as “moot”.

The two parties had wanted an order declaring the Home Affairs Minister’s handling of the visa as unlawful.

However, Judge Dennis Davis said the Dalai Lama withdrew his application to visit the country and the events he had planned to visit have long since passed.

The spiritual leader was due to attend Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s 80th birthday celebrations in October 2011
