Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood said on their website Monday that the attack that killed 16 Egyptian police in Sinai late Sunday “can be attributed to the Mossad,” the Israeli intelligence service. The Brotherhood said that this operation was an attempt to destabilize the Islamic regime of President Mohamed Morsi, who was elected in June According to the Muslim Brotherhood, it is now “imperative to review the terms” of the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian army vowed to “avenge” the killing of the 16 border guards by “terrorists” who then infiltrated into Israel before being neutralized.

Army sources accused elements from the Palestinian enclave of Gaza Strip for supporting the attackers. This attack, the most serious against Egyptian forces in the peninsula since the signature of the peace accords in 1979, increased the pressure on Egypt’s authorities to restore security in the peninsula where the situation has deteriorated since the revolt last year.

“The Egyptians will not wait long to see the reaction to the attack by terrorists,” said the Egyptian Military Council. The military said that the perpetrators of the attack, which was carried out by 35 gunmen, took place at the time of the meal breaking the fast of Ramadan (Iftar).

The attackers, who were suspected of being part of the “Global Jihad”, raided a border crossing between Egypt and Israel, before entering Israeli territory with an armored vehicle taken from the Egyptian side.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak visited the site of the attack on the Israeli side. Barak expressed “hope that this is a reminder to the Egyptians on the need to be vigilant and effective on their side.”

Eight members of the attacking cell were killed, according to Barak.
