Greek Political Leaders Fail To Agree PM

By

The talks between Greece’s political leaders on a new coalition government ended on Wednesday without reaching agreement on a new prime minister, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

Outgoing premier George Papandreou, opposition leader Antonis Samaras and President Karolos Papoulias met in the presidential palace. The talks are to continue on Thursday morning.

Earlier on Wednesday, Papandreou announced he would step down as Greek prime minister to make way for a new coalition government to save the country from bankruptcy.

Papandreou said earlier this week he would go in order to help form a coalition government comprising his socialist PASOK party and the center-right New Democracy party.

The new government is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections in February 2012.
