Syria: At Least Nine Killed As Massive Clashes Reported In South

Locals confirmed that hundreds of dissidents from the Syrian army on clashed with government troops backed by tanks in the south of Syria.

It was one of the biggest clashes since the popular uprising against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad has started some nine months ago.

Syrian government troops stormed into the town of Basrah al Harir, located some 40 kilometers north of the Jordanian border. Local residents said they heard the sound of explosions and machine guns from the area as defectors tried to hit the Syrian army’s supply lines.

Meanwhile, the local coordinating committees conveyed that at least 9 people were killed on Sunday in various parts of the country. This toll included four in the city of Hama; and two in each of Homs and Idlib. Another was killed in the southern town of Dara’a.
