Mountain Lion Release Teases New iMac, Mac Pro

By

The release of Mountain Lion, the latest version of Apple’s OS X operating system, has revealed that two new Mac desktop computers are potentially on the way, Digital Spy said.

Apple Insider spotted two new model numbers within the lines of code for Mountain Lion’s dual-booting Boot Camp assistant software.

This included the ‘MP60’, thought to be the next Mac Pro tower, and the ‘IM130’, potentially a new iMac.

At the WWDC 2012 event, Apple announced a major revamp to its MacBook range of laptops, including various upgrades such as faster Intel chips and a model with a Retina Display.

Apple also rolled out a relatively modest update to the current Mac Pro line, leading some to suggest that the firm intended to phase out the desktop range in favour of more lucrative laptops and mobile devices.

But asked about plans for its desktop range by a concerned customer in June, Apple chief executive Tim Cook said that the firm was “working on something really great for later next year”.

In an email, Cook said: “Our Pro customers like you are really important to us. Although we didn’t have a chance to talk about a new Mac Pro at [the WWDC] event, don’t worry as we’re working on something really great for later next year. We also updated the current model.”

Apple has a packed end of year in terms of new products, with the new iPhone and potentially the iPad Mini small-screen tablet rumoured for launch.

The firm may therefore look to launch a new iMac and Mac Pro in 2013. It is thought that the models will not feature optical drives.

Apple Insider feels that Apple will opt to incorporate high-performance SSD RAID options in its new desktops as a way to create “a reduced profile” for the products.

Other speculation has suggested that the range will come with monitors featuring the Retina Display that is now on the newer iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro.

Apple has been selling more MacBook laptops than desktops since 2006, but it remains a strong player in the desktop space, particularly with the ongoing woes for PC manufacturers.

I am very disappointed in Apple. As a business owner, I need to upgrade our computers and assumed Apple would upgrade their iMac during the last WWDC conference in June. Now I have to read rumors that there may be a new iMac in September. Now what happens if there is no iMac in September? Do I just sit back and wait until next year? No other computer company works like this. All other companies give us concrete, set due dates and times for new releases and upgrades. I am not the only business that has this problem with Apple. I have read many other comments and posts online from other businesses who have had it with Apple and are turning to PC’s like Dell, HP, and others. I am starting to think that Apple has a corporate attitude much like a college campus “Ooooh, let’s make everything secret. Let’s be mysterious and make everyone wait.” Well guess what Apple, you have lost another consumer of your products. Your business attitude is very unprofessional and lacks any type of sympathy, understanding or courtesy for your customers. Thank God you have gadgets to sell (iPhones, iPads, iPods, etc…) because the tide is turning and people and businesses like me are tired of guessing and waiting while we desperately need to upgrade our computers. SHAME ON YOU Apple. You need a wake up call and I hope everyone who reads this copies this and passes it along. If you can’t be reasonable and professional like all the other computer companies and tell us whether or not an upgrade is coming for all your products, than you deserve to lose customers.

I agree with half of what you said. I’m frustrated that reports are expecting this refresh in 2013. We’re all waiting for the refresh, and the unknown is killing us.
I don’t think they deserve to lose customers. If you desperately need to upgrade – then upgrade!
I would be disappointed if there was no iMac refresh in September-October, but I would understand that Apple had a pretty good reason to delay the refresh. Right now I’m still hopeful for a release date September-October.
      Calm down buddy :-D
