Israel Apologizes For Death Of Egyptian Soldiers

By

Israel’s Defense Minister Ehud Barak has apologized to Egypt for the death of Egyptian soldiers, accidently killed by Israeli troops in August, the country’s defense ministry said.

In mid-August an Egyptian officer and two privates were killed by gunfire from an Israeli helicopter, which was pursuing militants in Sinai near the Egyptian border.

“Basing on the report from the commission that investigated the incident, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak extends his apologies for the death of Egyptian law enforcers, who were killed in Israeli gunfire,” the Israeli Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The death of the Egyptian soldiers provoked a wave of mass protests in Egypt in late August. Protesters surrounded the Israeli embassy in Cairo demanding that the Israeli ambassador immediately leave the country and Egypt cut off all diplomatic ties with Israel.
