Thailand: Bombs Explode On Bangkok Street

By

An Iranian citizen was severely injured today when a bomb he apparently threw at police on a busy street exploded close to him.

There were initial reports that either three or five bystanders were also hurt in two blasts on Bangkok’s Sukhumvit 71.

Thai TV news reports said the Iranian, carrying a black bag, first threw a bomb at a taxi after its driver refused to take him as a passenger.

When police got to the scene, some reports said, he then threw a second bomb that hit a tree and bounced back at him, blowing off both his legs. Other eyewitness accounts said he dropped the device. There are also unconfirmed reports that the house where the man was living may be storing further explosives.

Last month, following information from US and Israeli intelligence sources, a cache of some four tonnes of chemicals used for making bombs was found at a house just outside the Thai capital. One of two Middle Eastern suspects was arrested but the other remains at large.
