Abbas Insists On UN Move Amid Israeli Warnings

By

The president of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas said Wednesday that the Palestinian request from the General Assembly of the United Nations and the UN Security Council to obtain full membership is an “Arab decision and irreversible,” noting that going to the United Nations is not a unilateral move.

Abbas said during a meeting with the chief editors of the Egyptian press that “Our approach to the United Nations does not mean we are against the negotiations, but this approach to the international organization is taking place because negotiations do not exist.”

The Palestinian leader said he met personally with the Israeli President and Defense Minister Ehud Barak more than once, but did not see anything new in order to move the peace process. Asked on the future steps after going to the United Nations, Abbas said: “Whatever the result is positive or negative, we will bring it to the Palestinian leadership to take the appropriate decision.”

Meanwhile, Israel opposes the Palestinians’ planned U.N. bid. Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned Wednesday that it would have unspecified “grave implications.” The United States has promised to veto the bid if it reaches the U.N. Security Council.
