Syrian Army Trying To Re-Take Key Positions In North

By

The Syrian army tried Sunday, through air raids and artillery, to re-take key positions held by the rebels who have registered several successes in the north of the country.

On Sunday, the army launched an attack in the north to re-take positions and repulse a rebel offensive against the largest military base in the province of Idleb, according to a Syrian NGO. The Syrian air force bombed al-Maaret Noomane taken by the rebels earlier this week.

By capturing the town on the road to Aleppo, the rebels have slowed down the movement of military reinforcements to the key city, a scene for heavy fighting since mid-July. Blocking its supply routes weakens the army, which is already struggling to cope on all fronts across the country.

To the east of al-Maaret Noomane, fighting took place around the important Wadi Daif base, which contains fuel tanks, tanks and a large number of soldiers, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). Further north, near the rebel town of Saraqeb, the army has withdrawn from a checkpoint on the route to Aleppo. Also in Idleb, the rebels captured three officers at a checkpoint in Jisr al-Shughour, where they captured 256 soldiers last week.

The rebels seized Saturday two bases in the regions of Homs (center) and Damascus before losing it Sunday. “The important are the weapons and ammunition they captured during the attack,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of SOHR.

On the political front, although termed several times his mission as “very difficult,” the international envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, is still trying to find a political solution by visiting main regional powers and after holding talks in Saudi Arabia and Turkey, he went Sunday to Iran, President Assad’s main ally. Yesterday, he discussed with Turkish leaders the “urgent need to find a way to stop the bloodshed and to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people” and the “negative impact of the conflict on the region,” according to a statement released on Sunday.
