Scores Of Pilgrims Killed In South India Stampede

(RFE/RL) — More than 60 people have been killed and scores of others injured during a stampede at a Hindu religious festival in southern India.

Authorities say the crush occurred when crowds of pilgrims panicked after a road accident in a remote, mountainous area of Kerala state.

More than 70 others were injured.

Stampedes at public events are common in India as large numbers of people crowd into congested areas.

Women, children, and the elderly frequently make up the majority of victims.
