Syria: GCC Countries Say Annan Plan Doomed To Failure

The Gulf countries are beginning to “seriously” question the likelihood of success of the peace plan for Syria by International envoy Kofi Annan. “The confidence in the efforts of the international envoy begins to weaken rapidly and seriously”, said yesterday Prince Saud al-Faisal, Saudi foreign minister, speaking on behalf of the six Gulf monarchies gathered in Riyadh. The Prince commented on the situation in Syria: “The fighting continues, the violence continues, the bloodshed continues. Nothing has been done, except for the fact that the level of violence decreased. But can we consider that there is progress if 60 people are killed per day instead of 80? ”

Despite sending an observer mission to the country, the international community has so far been unable to stop the violence and enforce the cease-fire in Syria. Currently, 189 UN observers are in Syria to monitor the implementation of the plan.

Yesterday, at least 37 people – including nine civilians – were killed across the country, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

Since the outbreak of March 15, 2011 popular revolt, which was gradually militarized, violence has claimed THE LIVES OF more than 12,000 people, mostly civilians.
