Ukraine: Tymoshenko’s Supporters Nominate Her For Nobel Prize

By

The opposition party BYT-Batkivschina sent to the Nobel Committee all the necessary documents in order to nominate former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko for the Nobel Peace Prize, a deputy of the party Natalia Korolevskaya said on Thursday.

“Yulia Tymoshenko is the symbol of democracy in Ukraine and I think that the Nobel Committee and the European countries will help to reverse the current situation,” Korolevskaya said.

The ex-premier was jailed in October for seven years on abuse of office charges over a gas deal she concluded with Russia in 2009, a verdict internationally condemned as politically motivated.

Since her conviction on the abuse of office charges, prosecutors have reopened an investigation into tax evasion dating from the second half of the 1990s, when Tymoshenko was the head of United Energy Systems of Ukraine.
