Spain Welcomes Election Of New Secretary-General Of League Of Arab States

Spain has congratulated Ahmed Aboul Gheit on being elected as the new Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and took the opportunity to reiterate to the outgoing Secretary-General, Nabil El-Arabi, its acknowledgement of his work carried out over the five years that he has headed up the Secretariat-General of the League.

In a statement, the Government of Spain wished Ahmed Aboul Gheit every success in his mandate as Secretary-General, which begins in July and trusts that the high degree of collaboration it has traditionally maintained with the Arab League will continue in this new period, including in terms of the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2014.

“The deep-rooted historic ties that Spain has with the Arab world and the important economic ties with the region justify the fact that the intense relations we maintain with the League of Arab States has been a constant factor in our foreign policy over recent years,” the Spanish government said, noting t he Office for the Representation of the Arab League in Madrid opened in the 1950s has also contributed to this, and it currently serves to maintain ongoing communication between the League of Arab States and the Spanish authorities and international bodies based in Spain, such as the case of the World Tourism Organization and the Union for the Mediterranean.
