The Russian Invasion Of Ukraine: A Call For Pragmatic Solutions – Analysis

By

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is by far the most brutal war in the annals of history. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, supported by the combined West, has reached a decisive point where President Trump, with his remarkable leadership, is set to end the war with a realistic solution.

It is no secret that the West, led by the previous United States administration, never resorted to finding a solution to the conflict but followed a strategy that fueled it to proceed to more disaster. Their approach focused on two things: helping Ukraine preserve its sovereignty through war-fighting against the aggressor and using Ukraine to destroy Russia’s military might in a proxy war. Sadly, the result is a new world order that has permanently changed the international security landscape.

A Shift in Strategy

The United States representatives who participated in the recently concluded Munich Security Conference (MSC) emphasized the importance of finding a lasting solution to the conflict. This signals that the Trump administration is moving away from the traditional approach adopted by Biden’s administration and the leaders in Europe. President Trump seeks a solution to prevent further catastrophe. His strategy, the necessity to talk to the adversary, sent a clear message to all actors and shocked the European leaders.

Furthermore, the representatives of the United States administration did not hesitate to express their frustration over the European governments’ lack of understanding and inability to grapple with the reality of issues that affect them and the United States. The United States emphasized the importance of finding a lasting solution to Ukraine’s quagmire based on ground realities.

A Fundamental Paradigm Shift

The aim of finding a lasting solution to Ukraine’s quagmire based on ground realities is a fundamental paradigm shift that shocked Europe and Ukraine equally. European countries are seemingly entrenched in a preconceived mindset with a belief that Russia is the main threat, which the United States steadfastly seconded in the past. However, Vice President JD Vance warned European leaders during the conference about a threat from within regarding their security. Europe never envisaged a bold paradigm shift initiated by the United States that publicly highlighted their weaknesses in international forums.

NATO’s Role and Europe’s Challenges

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) consists of 30 European countries with powerful military establishments, including two nuclear-armed militaries in the region. Despite all these facts, Russia, single-handedly, has been able to instill fear, effectively fixating a fear-driven mindset among European leaders through various methods, including hybrid warfare strategies. In the absence of the United States in a hypothetical situation, it is difficult to fathom why the most powerful military organization, comprised of 30 European countries, cannot stand self-reliantly without piggybacking on Ukraine.

Europe must come out of self-imposed mind-imprisonment and approach reality pragmatically. European members of NATO need to increase their military readiness in an adaptable manner, including enhancing war-fighting and hybrid warfare capabilities to instill fear in the adversary. Such an approach will improve their self-reliance in an ever-changing security dynamic in a global setup.

Ukraine’s Role in European Security

On the other hand, Ukraine needs to focus on its security as a nation rather than being a savior for the rest of Europe. Similarly, the notion of Ukraine defending other European countries against Russia should not be a precursor for any future solution.

So far, the European countries have not proposed any realistic solution to the issue. They continue to follow and promote the failed strategy, such as the mantra of “as long as it takes” and the notion that “Russian President Putin must be defeated to save Europe.” Unfortunately, that strategy has only proven to be a disaster by any standards. This failed approach has created unanticipated developments in the international security landscape with a new world order. It is a bitter pill to swallow for many traditional political leaders in Europe.

Rethinking Europe’s Strategy

It is time for Europe to rethink and strategize its approach pragmatically and consider Ukraine a bonus in its security strategy but not as the sole savior of Europe against any future Russian aggression. Ukraine’s geographical location will continue to be next to Russia, a bitter neighborhood unless both change their attitudes toward each other. Both Russia and Ukraine have suffered immensely due to grave mistakes in the political spectrum of both countries in particular and the West in general. Russia perceived NATO’s eastward expansion as a direct threat and an encirclement. Similarly, Ukraine’s expression of its ambition to join NATO further fueled the already damaged Russia’s trust in the West.

The Need for Pragmatic Solutions

The Russian invasion of Ukraine can be considered a strategic miscalculation by every metric. Russia invaded Ukraine expecting rapid victory, but it was engulfed and entrenched in a disastrous, prolonged conflict. On the other hand, Ukraine’s ambition to join NATO is at a crossroads and country in a precarious situation. The West’s staunch support for Ukraine with the hope of decimating Russian military might by waging a proxy war has failed to achieve its intention.

Traditional methods and approaches to conflict resolution, such as “as long as it takes,” only ruin the chances of finding a lasting solution. Continued military support without seeking a solution and adapting “hope” eventually becomes hopeless. This is the case with Western support for Ukraine and pursuing a failed strategy without recourse. No political leader in the free world, including former President Biden, has had the fortitude to ask President Zelensky about the end state of the war based on ground realities despite having so many advisors around them. They continued to follow an illogical approach that created new security alliances, making the world more dangerous.

Nevertheless, as Vice President JD Vance said, “There is a new sheriff in town.” Indeed, there is a new sheriff, meaning traditional and inside-the-box attitudes have no place in future international conflict resolution strategies. In this context, President Trump’s initiative to find a lasting solution to the conflict is the best initiative in recent conflict resolutions. Hopefully, this initiative will prevent further catastrophes and human suffering and find a practical, lasting solution by addressing root causes.

Lastly, Europe needs to formulate its vision, which entails a more potent security strategy with formidable forces capable of conventional and hybrid warfare, instilling fear and creating chaos in the adversary through a position of strength.

The Russian Invasion of Ukraine at the first place should never have taken place. Call For Pragmatic Solutions have always been there but NOT by the stake holders surprisingly! The US-NATO and even Ukraine was not inclined to end the war dreaming to defeat Russia and win the war!
Now to fulfill the election promise President Trump and Russian President Putin have aimed at resolving the conflict. However, differences have already cropped up. Ukrainian President Zelensky has firmly stated that Ukraine will not accept any peace deals negotiated without its participation while high-level US and Russian officials prepare for talks in Saudi Arabia.
The exclusion of European and Ukrainian representatives from the US-Russia talks has led to frustration among European leaders. May be President Trump will include NATO-European stake holders and Ukrainian representatives in the subsequent meetings hopingly.
