Libya: Gaddafi Ready For Elections Says Son
Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi on Thursday said that his father would agree to hold elections under an international supervision, on condition the results would not be rigged.
Saif al-Islam told the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera”: “You can make this election within three months and by the end of the year at the latest. It could be with the presence of international observers to guarantee transparency.”
Saif al-Islam said that the elections could be subject to the supervision of various organizations including the European Union, the African Union and the United Nations or even NATO, which is bombing Qaddafi’s troops now.
He said: “I have no doubt that the overwhelming majority of Libyans stand with my father. The rebels are Islamic fundamentalists and extremists who are motivated by the hands of foreign terrorists and mercenaries working on the orders of French President Nicolas Sarkozy.”
He explained that his father would be willing to step aside if he lost the election but he will not go into exile. “He would never leave Libya. He was born here and wants to die here.”
