Egypt Orders Prominent NGO To Close Down

By

Egyptian authorities on Wednesday ordered a prominent NGO, the Nadeem Center for the Rehabilitation for Victims of Violence and Torture, to close its doors, Reuters reported.

Security services and a lawyer representing the center said authorities had agreed not to formally shutter the NGO’s facilities until next week, so that officials would have time to determine the reasons behind the decision.

This is the latest in a series of crackdowns on NGOs in Egypt, frequently for alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, that has been ongoing since former president Mohammad Morsi was ousted from power in 2013.
