TV Series About KGB Spies To Be Screened In US

A period drama inspired by the true story of a famous U.S. couple who were executed for espionage on behalf of the Soviet Union is being created in the Untied States, the Deadline.com entertainment news portal has reported.
The series, entitled The Americans, centers on two KGB spies posing as U.S. nationals living on the outskirts of Washington, DC in the early 1980s.
“The arranged marriage of Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings grows more passionate and genuine by the day but is constantly tested by the escalation of the Cold War and the intimate, dangerous and darkly funny relationships they must maintain with a network of spies and informants under their control,” a report published on the Deadline.com portal reads.
“Complicating their relationship further is Phillip’s growing sense of affinity for America’s values and way of life and the couple’s two children, who know nothing about their parents’ true identity,” the report reads.
The drama was inspired by the story of KGB spies Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, who were arrested in the United States in 1950 and, after a quick trial, were sentenced to death for passing secrets, including information about the atomic bomb, to the Soviets.
Their execution in 1953 became the first execution of civilians for espionage in U.S. history.
“After seemingly headed to the vaults of Cold War lore, the concept of Russian spies came back to the forefront last year when the FBI arrested 10 alleged deep-cover Russian agents,” the Deadline.com said in its report.
A spy row between Moscow and Washington broke out in June 2010 when the ten alleged Russian spies were arrested in the United States. The members of the ring were swapped for four alleged U.S. spies held in Russia and warned never to return to the United States.
