Syria: Seven Dead In Bombing Attack

By

Seven people were killed and hundreds more wounded in a suicide bombing attack that struck the town of Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria Saturday, said the spokesman for the Syrian Foreign Ministry. The attack happened in the neighborhood Massaken Ghazi Ayash. The bomber used “500 kilograms of explosives,” said Jihad Makdissi by his Twitter account . He said a group of UN observers inspected the site of the attack.

“A suicide bomber drove the car that exploded in the district of Ghazi Massaken Ayash,” reported previously Syria’s state television. “The residential buildings, public and private facilities near the site of the terrorist attack have seen substantial damage,” it stated. The images broadcast by the official TV showed destroyed buildings, carcasses of vehicles, a large crater and blood stains on a road.

Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR) has also reported a suicide car bomb in the city, saying the explosion occurred in a street housing the headquarters of the military intelligence.

The Syrian opposition has accused the regime of President Bashar al-Assad of having instigated the suicide car bombing attack, as well as “all criminal attacks” that rocked the country recently. The Syrian National Council (SNC), the main opposition coalition, said ” the Syrian regime is fully responsible for the criminal attacks in several Syrian cities including one today in Deir Ezzor ” , according a statement.

This is the first attack of its kind in this city where the authorities announced Friday to have foiled a suicide car bomb. Several deadly bombings rocked the capital Damascus and Aleppo, the second largest city in the country since the beginning of the revolt against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011. On May 10, a double bombing killed 55 people in Damascus.

Most attacks were claimed by obscure small groups . On Thursday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon attributed the attacks to Al-Qaeda, but later retracted his statement .

Elsewhere in the country, the SOHR has reported a loud explosion in Douma in the province of Damascus, without elaborating.
