US President Donald Trump said that Brazil will be one of the main allies of the US outside of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Trump also considered the possibility of Brazil’s joining the organization, formed by European and North American countries, which was born as an attempt to oppose the socialism then led by the former Soviet Union.

He intends to designate Brazil as a major non-NATO ally, adding the two nations are working together to protect people from terrorism, transnational crime, and the traffic of drugs, guns, and persons.

Trump and Bolsonaro met today (Mar. 19) at the White House. The US president described the meeting as “excellent.”

Barriers

Trump said the companies in his country are ready to enter the Brazilian market, waiting for changes in the “rules of the game.” He added that “reciprocity” is his favorite word and that Brazil and the US are willing to reduce commercial barriers between the two nations.

The US head of state said he is committed to reducing commercial barriers and facilitate investment and innovation in a number of sectors, such as energy, agriculture, and technology. The Brazilian president has a vision of granting leeway for the private enterprise and open the economy, he pointed out. This is the path for Brazil to have a solid economic growth, he went on to say. US companies are ready to jump in when the rules of the game are even, Trump said after the meeting with Bolsonaro.

Trump added that if Brazil comes to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the country will “raise its status.” The US president had already confirmed its support for Brazil’s addition into the organization.

Alcântara Space Center

The US president also complimented the Alcântara Space Center, in Maranhão state, where the US will be allowed to launch rockets after the ratification of an Agreement on Technological Safeguards by the two countries. The move awaits approval from the Brazilian Congress.

Trump described Alcântara as an extraordinary place and highlighted its strategic location near the Equator as well as the significant amount of money to be spared.

Venezuela

Trump praised Brazil’s stance regarding the crisis in Venezuela. He noted that it was one of the first countries to recognize Juan Guaidó as Venezuela’s acting president and expressed gratitude for Brazil’s support in sending humanitarian aid to the neighboring country.
