Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad downplayed Saturday the impact of the new round of sanctions which western countries intend to impose on Tehran for six months.

“The sanctions have not and will never affect the development of Iranian people,” President Ahmadinejad said in an interview with a Mexican TV broadcast Saturday.

The Iranian president stressed that that his country would deal with any threat to it appropriately.

“Iranian people will deal with any threat and defend their country with all their power,” he said.

He went on to say that “the era of colonialism and dictatorship is over”.

The Iranian President underscored that “the Iranian nuclear program has turned into a political issue and it became evident that America and its allies seek a pretext to prevent Iranian people from benefiting from the peaceful nuclear energy.”

Ahmadinejad also ruled out the possibility of a US military attack against Iran.

“We believe that there are wise people in America who are trying to counter the actions of some crazy Americans and the Iranian people have mastered dealing with the difficult circumstances.”

He pointed out that his country fully cooperates with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“All nuclear activities are under the IAEA control,” Ahmadinejad said noting some are trying to undermine countries’ independence under the pretext inspecting nuclear facilities.
