The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, the leading Sunni institution in the Muslim world, on Friday called on Arab leaders to take action to stop the violence in Syria where the regime have been suppressing protests for the past 10 months.

“The Arab leaders must take serious and immediate action to stop the bloodshed of the Syrians (…) and prevent foreign intervention in an Arab land, “said Ahmed al-Tayyeb, head of the famous theological institution based in Cairo.

His call comes as at least 15 people killed in Friday’s demonstrations.

Meanwhile, the head of the mission of the Arab observers is expected Saturday at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo in order to present his report. Sudanese General Mohamed Al-Dhabi’s report is based on the statements of some 165 team members who have been deployed in Syria since December 26. Hundreds of people have been killed since that date, according to the opposition and the UN.
