Peru’s Fujimori Undergoes More Surgery
By VOA
Doctors in Peru say imprisoned former President Alberto Fujimori has undergone another operation for cancerous lesions on his tongue.
The 72-year-old Fujimori underwent the procedure Monday in Lima. His daughter, Keiko, says the surgery went well.
Doctors first operated on cancerous nodes on Fujimori’s tongue in 2008. He went through a similar procedure in February of last year.
Fujimori is serving a 25-year prison sentence for human rights abuses committed during his 10-year rule. He has also been convicted of corruption.
Fujimori held power from 1990 until 2000.
He fled to Japan – the birthplace of his parents – during a corruption scandal in 2000.
Fujimori was arrested five years later when he traveled to Chile in an attempt to stage a political comeback. The Chilean Supreme Court eventually ruled that he should be extradited to Peru to face charges. He was sent back to Peru in 2007.
