Two Iranian warships on Tuesday entered the Suez Canal en route to the Mediterranean Sea, officials say.

Iran says the ships – a frigate and a supply vessel – are headed to Syria for drills. Israel last week described the planned transit as a “provocation.”

“The two ships entered the canal at around 5:45 am [03:35 GMT],” Suez Canal officials said.

Egypt’s official MENA news agency has reported that Iran has said the ships would not carry any military equipment, nuclear materials or chemicals.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday he would take a “grave view” of the first Iranian warships to pass through the canal since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
